The story of Bruges begins long before the medieval skyline took shape. The area where Bruges now sits was first settled by the Menapii, a Belgic tribe mentioned by Julius Caesar. During the Roman era, the region became part of the province of Gallia Belgica. Archaeological discoveries show evidence of Roman camps and trading posts, suggesting that even in antiquity, this location was valued for its access to the North Sea via river channels.

The name "Bruges" likely derives from the Old Dutch word brugga meaning "bridge", an apt name for a city of waterways. By the 9th century, the Franks had built fortifications in Bruges to fend off Viking raids.
